Believers Fulfulling Their Calling Where God Has Placed Them
RRJ: As a manager at Sam’s Club, what does your job entail?
Michael: I assist and develop in directing our management team in all facility operations. I assist in providing supervision and development opportunities for members of management and hourly associates. I assist in directing and guiding members of management and hourly associates on proper member service approaches and techniques. I contribute to membership and sales growth. I coordinate, complete and oversee job-related activities and assignments. I ensure compliance with company policies and procedures and support our company mission, values and standards of ethics and integrity.
RRJ: Growing up in the small town of Hoke’s Bluff, Alabama, what qualities did you gain from your community that led you to be a Christ follower?
Shawn: My grandparents, specifically my Baptist-preacher grandfather, my youth choir director, and a friend’s mom, influenced me by being loving, genuine Christian examples. They saw a kid who wasn’t perfect, but that knew what perfection in Christ was and they just fed into that. Being in a small town, with people who had good values instilled in them early in life, made loving Jesus much easier than today’s kids have it with so many electronic distractions. We were outside – a lot – soaking in all God had to offer us in nature. It was a simpler time with good, solid, mostly like-minded people. It was also a community that allowed other parents to hold us accountable when we messed up. Loving Jesus was the norm, not the exception. Also, my parents’ generosity and loving spirits cannot be undervalued in who I am in Christ today.
RRJ: What goals have you set and achieved? In your opinion, where does your drive come from?
Charnelle: Two of the first goals I set were to obtain my cosmetology license and become a certified group fitness instructor. Once those goals were met, I started setting new ones. I graduated from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, commissioned in the Air Force, obtained my Teachers of English to Students of Other Languages (TESOL) certification and began teaching English as a Second Language.
RRJ: As a regional manager of BBVA Compass, what does your job entail?
Glenn: I manage all aspects of Mortgage Lending for BBVA Compass across the East Region. I lead a team of mortgage banking officers and area sales managers that work directly with clients to help them finance their real estate needs. I also work very closely with realtors, builders and developers to create product offerings specific to their client’s needs.
RRJ: Molly, as Executive Director at The Wellness Coalition, what does your job entail?
Molly: The Wellness Coalition is a nonprofit organization that works to get people the healthcare they need. We help uninsured adults connect with a doctor, apply for medication assistance, and learn how to manage chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension. We also offer wellness classes on diabetes prevention and chronic disease management. Healthcare access and literacy is a major need in our community, and uninsured adults will frequently use the emergency room for regular care instead of seeing a doctor. That is not good for the hospitals or the patients. We try to break that cycle by providing resources and education to improve our clients’ health and quality of life.
RRJ: Jason, you have worn many hats in your professional career… from being a lawyer for politicians to being a lobbyist for bankers. What is one standard you live by no matter what “hat” you are wearing?
Jason: The phrase “honesty is the best policy” might sound like an old cliché, but it’s a statement that has served me well. If the general public made a list of trustworthy professions, chances are high that “attorney” and “lobbyist” would not be near the top. Knowing that, I’ve worked especially hard to try and cultivate a reputation of being an honest broker. To me, that means not only telling the truth but also presenting the opposing viewpoints so that folks can see all sides of the issue. There are times when that standard might cause you to lose a battle, but it will never cause you to lose the war.
RRJ: Tiffany, you grew up in a Christian home, regularly going to church. How has this foundation grown your faith in God?
Tiffany: A foundation was most certainly laid, and my entire extended family were/are all believers. I grew up in a home where faith and church were a high priority and our lives and schedules were centered around the church. I learned at an early age to value God’s Word and begin to grid my life and decisions through a Biblical lens.
RRJ: How long have you two been married and how long did you date prior to marriage?
Thompsons: We have been married for 26 years, dated for four years and were engaged for seven months.
RRJ: Where did you meet?
Jean-Noel: We actually attended the same junior high school and high school in Arizona. In junior high we were in marching band together, and in high school we had several classes together, yet did not date until just after graduation. That summer of 1987, prior to starting as a freshman at Arizona State University, I went to spend some time in the public library to do some pre-studying in college algebra.
RRJ: Was there a specific moment in your life where you understood Jesus as Savior and Lord, or did that happen gradually?
Keon: I was raised in church because my mom was a Christian and pianist at five different churches in Mississippi. (Back then, church was only open one Sunday a month.)
I was baptized at an early age, but it wasn’t until I was 17 and my friends invited me to their youth retreat called DiscipleNow, hosted by First Baptist Church, that I truly believed. The youth minister, Troy Amster, gave an invitation. During that moment I felt God’s presence like never before. I accepted Him in my heart and that’s when I drew closer to Him. I received Him as my Father, Savior and Lord.
RRJ: You grew up knowing who Jesus was, but as a teen you say you saw Him in a different light. What would you say brought you to this awareness?
Dr. Trumbull: Although I knew about Jesus, I didn’t know him personally. In high school, I attended a summer camp with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and heard the late Dallas Cowboys Football Coach Tom Landry speak about his relationship with Christ. It was then that I realized my sinful nature and my need for a Savior.
