Fertile Ground for Growth

Written by Kim Hendrix

Judges 7:2: “The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands.  In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her, announce now to the people, ‘’Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’”

Have you ever taken credit for God’s work?  A great presentation at the office; a great play in the football game; an A+ on that all important final exam; a delicious homemade holiday meal?

Do You Know the Strength of Your Savior?

Written by Kim Hendrix

Romans 12:2:“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.  Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”

About a month ago, I was about to go for a walk when one of those sudden summertime thunderstorms rolled in.  You know the drill here in the Deep South, sudden strong winds, lightning, sideways rain and then, just as suddenly, it’s over.  As I headed out for my walk after this five minute blast, I discovered in that short amount of time that large trees were snapped, trash cans were tossed about and the awning from our neighborhood tennis courts was ripped to shreds and thrown across the park. I started thinking, as I often do with intense thunderstorms, that God’s strength is pretty amazing…even when it’s in the form of destruction. I stand in awe at how quickly and mightily He can move.

Deliver Your Flowers Today

Written by Kim Hendrix

Hebrews 3:12-13: “See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

Don’t Miss the Moments

Written by Kim Hendrix

Isaiah 41:10:“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

How often do you get fixed on a desired outcome and miss the moments along the way?  We can all have goals, in fact they’re encouraged, but when we put our entire focus on how things end, we can miss God’s powerful presence in the every day.

Let Him Speak

Written by Kim Hendrix

Ephesians 4:29: “Don’t use foul or abusive language.  Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.”

What do people hear when you speak?  I often pray on my way to work, “Dear Lord…May my words be encouraging; make me an encourager. May people feel better--lifted up from my words, my presence. May they hear and feel You.”

Growth Trends

Written by Kim Hendrix

Colossians 2:6-7: “And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him.  Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him.  Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”

What Do You Do For a Living?

Written by Kim Hendrix

Matthew 4:18-20:“One day as Jesus was walking along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers—Simon, also called Peter, and Andrew—throwing a net into the water, for they fished for a living.  Jesus called out to them, “Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!”  And they left their nets at once and followed him.” (NLT)

Unwrapping THE Gift!

Written by Kim Hendrix

John 14:27: “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart.  And the peace I give isn’t like the peace the world gives.  So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

Is it already happening in your house--gifts wrapped in beautiful festive paper, with perfectly tied bows, stacking up under the Christmas tree?  It’s that time again.  Our homes are decorated, our budgets are probably stretched thin, all as we attempt once again to focus on the reason for the season.

Throw It in Reverse

Written by Kim Hendrix

Mark 10:49: “When Jesus heard him, he stopped and said, “Tell him to

come here.”

Mark 12:30: “At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him.  He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes?”

When is the last time you decided to throw it in reverse?  You immediately think of driving, right, but this time I’m talking about throwing it in reverse in your service to the Lord...in sharing His love.

Are You Living a Messy (Me’si) Life?

John 16:33: “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me.  Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows.  But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”

Can You Hear It?

Written by Kim Hendrix

Deuteronomy 11:13, 16-17: “If you carefully obey all the commands I am giving you today, and if you love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul, and if you worship him, then he will send the rains in their proper seasons…But do not let your heart turn away from the Lord…if you do, He will shut up the sky and hold back the rain…”

How Did You Get So Much Bigger Than Me?

Written by Kim Hendrix

Luke 2:49-52: “Why were you searching for me?” he asked.  “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”  But they did not understand what he was saying to them.  Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them.  But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.  And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.

Finding Yourself

Written by Kim Hendrix

Psalm 48:14:“He is our God forever

and ever, and he will be our guide until we die.”

Do you remember heading off to college?  Maybe that’s what you’re doing right now.  Many young people look at college as a chance to be out on their own, to come out from under Mom and Dad (until you need some money!), to make your own mark and well… find yourself.  Some people even later in life say they need some time away from it all so they can find themselves.  Have you found yourself or are you still looking?

Wade In!

Written by Kim Hendrix

Isaiah 41:10: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Last month, Easter weekend in fact, our teenaged daughter found a photo from when she was barely two years old.  It shows Annie, as a sweet little toddler, cautiously wading into the surf with her daddy by her side, watching over her.  Daddy looks sure and strong, while Annie seems cautious but determined--stepping into something new with great excitement because she knew she was protected.  She knew her father was right there, every step of the way.

Are You Blooming?

Written by Kim Hendrix

Galatians 6:8-10: “But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.  So let’s not get tired of doing what is good.  At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.  Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone--especially to those in the family of faith.”

Pathway to Life

Written by Kim Hendrix

John 8:12: “When Jesus spoke again to the people he said, ‘I am the light of the world.  Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’”

“Don’t waste this pain” were the words of Rev. Jay Wolf to a sanctuary packed with young people mourning the loss of a 19-year-old friend.  This young man, described as winsome, engaging and personable had struggled through the years and now his life was over, far too soon.  His family, distraught and devastated, called on the minister to talk about a better choice.  What do we do now?

A Beautiful Blur

Written by Kim Hendrix

Ecclesiastes 3:1: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

Do you ever feel like your life is a blur?  Your days are filled with trying to get children to and fro, work, supporting your spouse, cleaning the house, making dinner, watching school sports or activities, attending church programs, remembering to pick your children up again, trying to get in a workout and then hoping to hit your pillow at a decent hour so you can get a little rest before starting all over again!  Sound familiar?

Are We There Yet?

Written by Kim Hendrix

2 Corinthians 1:8-11: “We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life.  Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death.  But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.  He has delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us.  On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers.”

A New Season

Written by Kim Hendrix

Hebrews 10:23: “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.”

Here in the Deep South we’re never quite sure when the fall season will truly find us. We’re always hopeful for a day where the stifling humidity breaks and the temperature stays out of the 90s, maybe even the 80s, but we’re never quite sure when it will hit. When it comes, we’re thankful.

Living Outside the Lines

Written by Kim Hendrix

Psalm 25:4: “Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths.”

It wasn’t the first time I had seen this particular man walking his dog, but it was the first time their path, or lack of it, really stood out to me.  While the rest of us were busy keeping our pets moving along the sidewalk in the park, this man was going from tree to tree in a grassy field, at times waiting for several minutes as his little dog tried to stare down a squirrel some 15 feet high.  It was a familiar scene I had witnessed many times before, but on this day I decided to say something.  “I like the way you let your dog go wherever she wants,” I said to the man.  He replied with a smile, “Yeah my wife gets on me, but I say it’s her walk, so I’m going to let her go where she wants!”

Great Expectations

Written by Kim Hendrix

1 Peter 5:7: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.”

When you hear the word “expectations” what comes to mind—excitement or anxiety?  Expectations is a word that brings possibilities or pressure—maybe a little of both.

Treasure Hunting
